In the first half of the 19th century, the Principality of Moldavia was going through important political, economic and social transformations. In this complex context the foundation of certain semi-urban settlements had economical relevance for the Prince and the boyars. Their development depended on several factors, such as the proximity to a commercial road, to an inn, but also on the manner in which the owner of the estate they were placed on intervened, through the commissar, in its economic and social life.
One of these settlements was Podul Iloaiei, a market town that appeared and started to develop from 1818 near the homonymous village, around an old inn found on one of the main commercial roads of Moldavia.
