The French press and the events in Bucharest in August 1865. Reactions and attitudes

The events that took place in Bucharest at the beginning of August 1865 played an important part in deteriorating the image of Alexandru Ioan Cuza abroad. At the same time, they allowed his political opponents to achieve an important advantage in their fight for ousting the one that had become known as “the Prince of the Union”.
Important not only for its perceptions and as an expression of the French public opinion’s feelings, the press of the Second Empire reflected to a certain extent the attitude of the decisional French circles towards the realities in the United Principalities. The change in the position of France, noticeable even in the first part of 1864, became an incontestable fact after the events in August 1865.
